Montreal Impact Midfielder Ignacio Piatti Voted MLS Player of the Week

May 10, 2016 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

NEW YORK (Tuesday) - Montreal Impact midfielder Ignacio Piatti was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 10th week of the 2016 MLS season.

Piatti has dazzled this season, leading Montreal to the top of the Eastern Conference table (4-3-3, 15 points) and is now tied for fourth in the Audi Golden Boot standings with six goals after scoring twice in Saturday's wild 4-4 draw at Columbus Crew SC - his second brace of the season. The 31-year old Argentinian is well on pace to break last year's nine-goal mark and has proven vital to Montreal's attack, starting every match this season and aiding the Impact to a three-game unbeaten streak.

Already with two Goal of the Week wins this season, Piatti again provided another goal worthy of a third award at MAPFRE Stadium. With Montreal down a goal early, Didier Drogba found Piatti in the box who was then swarmed by Crew SC defenders, but managed to find space with a smooth back heel pass to himself to set up a wondrous curling strike past a diving Steve Clark in the 26th minute.

After Montreal fell behind 4-2, Piatti helped fuel a furious rally scoring his second goal in the 58th minute of play to bring the Impact within a goal of Columbus. Piatti collected a Dominic Oduro pass and showed great technical ability, faking out two Columbus defenders in the penalty area and sending a rocketing ball into the back of the net to bring the Impact within a goal. The Impact completed its amazing comeback when Oduro tied the match at 4-4 with a goal in the third minute of stoppage time.

The Montreal Impact next host Philadelphia Union at Stade Saputo on Saturday, May 14 (5 p.m. ET, RDS/TSN4).

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
