Storylines:
Quasi Quarterfinals Rematch: This will be Chicago and New Jersey/New York's first time facing off since the 2021 NWSL quarterfinals match that the Red Stars won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Mallory Pugh. Since that match, both teams have had considerable changes to their rosters and both teams will be without some veteran talent as players are still on international duty.
Go off in Gotham: The Red Stars head to Red Bull Arena looking to extend their unbeaten streak. Chicago has not won against Gotham on the road since the team was renamed from Sky Blue FC. In the 2021 regular season, the Red Stars' away record against New Jersey/New York was 0-1-1. With Chicago's away record this season currently standing at 1-1-2, the Red Stars are looking to secure another win on the road.
June's Over? July-ing: June was an eventful and successful month for the Red Stars with five games resulting in a 2-0-3 record. To top it off, the NWSL's Best XI of the Month included two key Red Stars players: Tatumn Milazzo and Mallory Pugh. Milazzo had an 83% passing accuracy and won over half of duels, aerial duels and tackles. Pugh, in third place for the 2022 NWSL Golden Boot, scored three goals in three consecutive games.
