Match Preview: Crew Begins Three-Match Road Swing with Clash in New England

October 3, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Columbus Crew SC News Release

COLUMBUS - The Columbus Crew (11-9-10, 43 points) kicks-off a crucial three-match stretch on the road by facing the New England Revolution (14-13-3, 45 points) on Saturday, October 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Time Warner Cable SportsChannel is televising the game, with Dwight Burgess and Chris Doran on the call. Neil Sika is set to describe the action for 95.5 The Game, with Carlos Cordova and Juan Valladares behind the microphone for La Mega 103.1 FM.

Saturday's meeting in Foxborough is the third and final match-up between Columbus and New England this season. The Crew has won both previous clashes between the two sides this season. The first - a 2-1 final at Gillette Stadium on July 26 - was fueled by a free-kick goal from Federico Higuain and a late winner from Ethan Finlay. At Crew Stadium, the Black & Gold beat New England by a 1-0 scoreline on September 20, also courtesy of a Federico Higuain free-kick strike.

All-time, the Crew is 31-20-11 when facing New England, with a 14-12-5 record in Foxborough. The Crew currently sits in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings, two points behind second-place New England. Overall, the Black & Gold are unbeaten over their last four matches (3-0-1) and carry a 7-2-2 record over their last 11 League fixtures. A result at New England would mark the Crew's first five-match unbeaten stretch of the season and the club's first since a six-match unbeaten streak (4-0-2) in 2012 from August 15 through September 1.

Federico Higuain recorded his 11th goal of the season last weekend against Montreal, tying his career-best mark from last year and giving him back-to-back campaigns of 11+ tallies. With 27 goals to his name in a Crew jersey, Higuain continues to climb in the club record book as he is one of just nine players in club history to record 25 or more goals as a member of the Black & Gold. He's now one goal shy of tying Dante Washington (28 goals) for seventh place on the club's all-time club scoring chart.
