Columbus Crew SC News Release

COLUMBUS - The Columbus Crew plays host to 2011 MLS Cup Champion L.A., in its annual "Blackout the Galaxy" night on Wednesday, Aug. 15. The Black & Gold will take the field with heavy hearts following the recent, tragic, passing of midfielder Kirk Urso on August 5. The Crew is planning to honor Urso's memory with a video tribute and a moment of silence as well as wearing black armbands imprinted with the number 15, Urso's number. The Black & Gold will also wear a number 15 patch on its jerseys for the remainder of the season.

Wednesday's match will kick off at 7 p.m. and be televised live nationally on the NBC Sports Network, with JP Dellacamera calling the game from the booth and former Crew midfielder Kyle Martino from field level. The game can also be heard in English on News/Talk 610 WTVN and on-line at TheCrew.com with Neil Sika and John Bluem on the call, and in Spanish on La Mega 103.1, with Carlos Cordova and Benny Pietrangelo behind the microphones.

This is the only matchup between the clubs this season, and the Crew (8-8-4, 28 pts.) will look to bounce back from the 1-0 loss at D.C. United suffered on August 4. The Black & Gold also hopes to improve on its positive 15-13-8 record against the Galaxy. Last season, L.A. took the series with two 1-0 victories at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. (July 20) and at Crew Stadium (Sept. 24).

After a slow start to the season, the Galaxy (11-11-3, 36 pts.) have been surging and have climbed back into playoff contention. They are coming off a 4-0 win against Chivas USA in the SuperClasico this past Sunday, Aug. 12. The 2011 MLS Cup Champions are led by their three Designated Players, Robbie Keane, who has 10 goals and six assists, Landon Donovan, who scored nine goals and leads the team with 11 assists, and David Beckham, who tallied six goals and nine assists this season. Donovan has been called into the U.S. Men's National Team for a friendly match against Mexico on Aug. 15, and will not be available for selection, but head coach Bruce Arena will also be able to count on midfielder Mike Magee and veteran forward Pat Noonan for extra fire power.

The Crew will only have a four-day turnaround before it has to return to the field as it travels to BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas, to face the Dynamo in a crucial eastern Conference matchup on Sunday, August 19 at 9 p.m. ET.
