HIGHWAY 99 DERBY PREVIEW
The Foxes return to Chukchansi Park for their test against regional rival Sacramento Republic FC. The two clubs will clash in the inaugural Highway 99 Derby on Wednesday, June 13 at 7 p.m. in downtown Fresno. The Foxes will look to take their unbeaten streak to three matches, following a 4-0 rout of Seattle Sounders 2 and a 1-1 draw at Reno 1868. The two clubs met in preseason and played to a 1-1 draw at Turlock's Warrior Stadium with the Foxes receiving a goal from Juan Pablo Caffa. On Wednesday, the two teams will play for the first time in league play, with the Foxes (3W-4L-7D, 16 points) looking to jump the standings into playoff contention, while Republic FC (7W-3L-4-D 25 points) hopes to cement its place near the top of the Western Conference table.
The contest will pit Fresno head coach Adam Smith against his former club, as well as players Danny Barrera, Christian Chaney, Agustin Cazarez and Mickey Daly. On the other side, Republic FC defender Elliott Hord and forward Villyan Bijev will return to their hometown for the first time as visitors. Hord was a former Fresno Fuego product and graduate of Bullard High School before landing with Republic FC, while Bijev graduated from Clovis North High School before his pro career led him to Sacramento.
