Mastroianni's big night lifts Lugs to win

Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts arrived home Thursday morning after a grueling six-game road trip to the state of Iowa. Fourteen hours later, they took the field against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Oldsmobile Park and picked up a 6-2 victory over the visitors before 2,813 fans.

Darin Mastroianni lead the way for Lansing, as he set the pace for the game in the first inning with a three-run homer that cleared the right field wall to put the Lugnuts ahead.

The Timber Rattlers bit back in the next inning though as Joe Dunnigan drove an opposite field home run of his own to left field that cut the lead to 3-2. The two-run shot came off of Lansing starter Kyle Ginley, who had not allowed an earned run until that point since April 9th.

The Lugnuts quickly answered Dunnigan's dinger with a two-run rally in the bottom of the frame that allowed them to regain a three run advantage. Kevin Ahrens's triple to right field plated Moises Sierra and made it a 4-2 game. Mastroianni then followed suit with a line drive single off of Wisconsin hurler Nathan Adcock's foot that drove home Ahrens to push the lead to 5-2.

Ginley (5-0) was able to settle down from the point on, as he notched his fifth win of the season. He delivered a quality start by tossing six innings and allowing just two runs on seven hits. He was also helped by several great defensive plays, as Justin Jackson made a leaping grab at shortstop in the second, and Mastroianni made a flying catch in the third that robbed Calvin Beamon of a sure double.

Adcock (0-2) took the loss for the Rattlers after giving up five runs in five innings of work.

Lansing (15-11) and Wisconsin (8-15) will play the second game of the series on Friday night at Oldsmobile Park beginning at 7:05 p.m. with LAFCU Fireworks following the game. A pair of southpaws will take the mound in the game. Nate Starner (1-2, 1.29) will get the start for the Lugnuts, while Donnie Hume (0-0, 0.00) will pitch for the Timber Rattlers.
