Can-Am New Jersey Jackals

Masterful Performance By Pavlik Paves Way For Jackals' Win

August 7, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release

Isaac Pavlik was masterful in front of his home crowd Tuesday. He struck out a season-high 11 Worcester Tornadoes and allowed only three hits in the Jackals' 2-0 victory.

In what was arguably the Jackals' best starting performance of the year, Pavlik shutout the Tornadoes through eight innings. Pavlik improves to 9-2 this season, moving to second in the Can-Am in strikeouts with 90. Teammate Steve Fox has struck out 100.

On a calm, cool mid-summer evening, Pitbull falls an inning short of what would have been his record-breaking 16th complete game in a Jackals uniform. He tied the record in a rain-shortened outing July 23rd.

Tornadoes starter Kevin Cooper allowed two New Jersey runs off six hits. He walked four and struck out three. Cooper suffers his third loss of the season against New Jersey and drops to 4-7.

The Jackals got on the board in the first inning when Matt Cusick drove in Bryan Sabatella with a line drive to right. Cusick finished 2-3 including the RBI.

Angel Berroa tacked on New Jersey's second and final run with a solo shot to left in the third, his 14th of the season. The home run puts him second on the team and in sole place of fourth in the Can-Am League.

Two of the Tornadoes' three hits came courtesy of rookie shortstop Ryan Brockett. Alex Nunez's infield single in the seventh was the only other hit off Pavlik.

With the win, the Jackals even the series and improve to 45-31. The Tornadoes fall to 22-54, maintaining fifth place in the Can-Am League. Because the game between the Rockland Boulders and Quebec Capitales was rained out, the Jackals are now three-and-a-half games back of the first-place Capitales.

New Jersey will play one more against the Worcester Tornadoes tomorrow morning. Kyle Greenwalt (5-2, 3.89) starts for the Jackals fresh off his own 11-strikeout performance. Fellow right-hander Walker McKinven (1-3, 8.10) goes for the Tornadoes. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05. The pregame begins 10 minutes prior.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2012 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
