Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (16-31) rode a strong pitching performance from Doug Johnson to a 5-2 win over the Sioux City Explorers (23-24) in front of 4,668 fans at the Birdcage on Saturday. The crowd is the largest to date for the Canaries this season.

The Explorers got on the board in the first inning with a two-run homer by Dan Meier. Meier's fifth home run of the season scored Zack Pace for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, Chad Hermansen drew a walk and scored on a double by Abner Arroyo. Arroyo was thrown out trying to take third and the inning ended with the Canaries trailing, 2-1.

The Birds capitalized on Explorers errors to tie the game in the fourth. Abner Arroyo and Dennis Anderson walked to put runners on first and second. John Schmitz hit a groundball to first base that was misplayed by Dan Meier. Second baseman Alex Llanos recovered the ball with Arroyo hung off of third base, but Llanos throw to third was errant and allowed Arroyo to score and tie the game, 2-2.

The Canaries took a decisive lead in the seventh. Angelo Fermin singled and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Hall. Fermin scored on John Schmitz single for a 3-2 lead. Dustin Delucchi doubled to score Fermin and Ralph Santana doubled to scored Delucchi for the 5-2 final.

Johnson (3-5) allowed two runs on six hits in 8.1 innings of work, and Matt Petrusek closed it out for his second save of the year. Aaron Marsden (1-2) took the loss.

The Canaries will host the Sioux City Explorers again tomorrow afternoon for the final game of their three-game series at the Birdcage and of first half play. Toyota will present a collectible pint glass to the first 500 adults over 21 on Sunday.
