Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

The Des Moines Buccaneers are excited to welcome Marty Mjelleli to the Buccaneers coaching staff. Mjelleli, a standout at St. Cloud State University and a former Buccaneer, joins the staff as an assistant coach and scout.

Marty started his junior hockey career playing in the BCHL, before joining the Buccaneers halfway through the 2001-2002 season. He would help lead the team to a playoff run and end his first USHL season with 11 goals, 12 assists and 23 points in the regular season and 3 goals and 1 assist in the playoffs. The next season, Mjelleli would play in all 60 games for the Buccaneers and would record 21 goals, 36 assists and 57 points as an assistant captain. He would also make the 2004 USHL All-Star game that year, as well as win the Community Service Award.

"Once a Buc, always a Buc. I am extremely honored to not only have worn a Buccaneer jersey but to now be coaching. It's a remarkable feeling, especially knowing that the Buccaneers are one of the best franchises in the USHL." said Mjelleli.

After playing for the Bucs, he would play for the St. Cloud State University Huskies. Mjelleli was recognized for his commitment to the sport; as well as his commitment to the community. He was a 3-time WCHA All-Academic Team selection. He would graduate Cum Laude with a double major in Business Marketing and Communication Studies. He finished his college career playing in 69 games with 7 goals, 14 assists and 21 points. He was named a finalist for the 2008 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and would make the All-America First Team, awarded to student athletes who excel in the classroom, in the community, in personal character and in competition. He was also nominated for the 2008 Hockey Humanitarian Award.

Earlier this year, Mjelleli was playing in the ECHL for the Gwinnett Gladiators and Johnstown Chiefs, an affiliate team for the NHL's Colorado Avalanche before being hired by the Buccaneers.
