Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - Winnipeg Goldeyes (41-52) starter RJ Martinez (6-4) was also the finisher on Saturday night as he authored a complete game four-hit shutout defeating the Kansas City Monarchs (54-37) 2-0 on Saturday night at Shaw Park. It was the first complete game in Martinez' two-year professional career. The left-hander allowed four hits, five walks and fanned two.
Over his last two starts he's pitched a total of 17 innings and has given up one run (0.53 ERA). It's the fourth time this homestand a Goldeyes pitcher has worked at least eight innings and gives Winnipeg back-to-back starts of nine innings - Joey Matulovich last night. It was the second complete game nine-inning shutout this year, Travis Seabrooke had his on June 26th at Lincoln.
Goldeyes' first baseman Tommy McCarthy got Winnipeg on the board in the fourth with a two-out RBI double plating designated hitter Miles Simington. The other Goldeyes run came in the seventh, on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Dayson Croes. Simington went 4-4 with three singles, a double, and a run scored. It was his first professional four-hit game.
Martinez was able to work around runners much of the night as Kansas City stranded nine. He had a tussle in the ninth as he twice retired the possible tying run including Monarchs second baseman L.J. Hatch who flied to centre field which ended the game.
With the win, Kansas City's ten-game winning streak at Shaw Park came to an end. The last win for Winnipeg here against the Monarchs was May 19, 2019. Kansas City didn't field a team in 2020 and the teams didn't play each other in Winnipeg in 2021.
It was the fifth pitched shutout by Winnipeg this year (second of the homestand) and the fourth time Kansas City has been blanked in 2023.
The final regular season home game is on Sunday afternoon at 1:00. Right-hander Zac Grotz who will make his first appearance with Kansas City. He'll be opposed by Winnipeg left-hander Travis Seabrooke (6-6) who is going to be the "opener" with fellow lefty Tyler Jandron (2-7) expected to follow.
GOLDEYES SCALES
Simington is the fourth Goldeye with four hits in one game this year. Croes, Javeyan Williams, and Chris Burgess are the others.
With the double, McCarthy snapped an 0-11 and 1-20 drought.
Croes leads the Goldeyes with six sacrifice flies.
The Goldeyes' earned run average through the first six games of this homestand is 1.86.
