Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

Fishkill, NY --- Hudson Valley Renegades 1B Gabby Martinez was 0 for 5 when he stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 14th tonight at Dutchess Stadium. One swing, however, was all he needed to go from goat to hero. His bases-loaded single with one out brought home C John Jaso with the winning run as the Renegades (15-12) rallied to beat the Aberdeen IronBirds (12-15). Aleurys Lopez (W, 2-1, 2.70) pitched seven strong innings of relief to earn the victory, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five. T.W. Mincey (0-1, 6.00) took the loss for Aberdeen.

The two teams played 13 scoreless innings before IronBirds 3B Manny Del Rosario hit an RBI single to right off Lopez, scoring 1B Mike Russell, whose hard shot down the left field line hit third base and bounded into the left field corner, giving him a double. The stage was set for the drama in the bottom of the 14th. With one out, CF Nate Dion singled to left and went to second on a wild pitch. After Jaso was intentionally walked, RF Matt Rico ripped a base hit into right field as Dion raced home to tie the score. DH Ray Serrano was given a free pass; Martinez then knocked a line drive over Del Rosario's head into left field for the game-winner. SS Aneudi Cuevas, though not involved in the 14th inning rally, had a big game as well, going 3 for 5. LHP Jino Gonzalez, making his first start as a Renegade, pitched a gem. He allowed no runs and one hit while striking out six in six innings of work. IronBirds starter Brian Finch also pitched well, giving up no runs and two hits, while fanning eight of the first nine hitters he faced (nine strikeouts overall) in five innings.

A sold-out crowd of 4,494 on T-Shirt Night, sponsored by Atlas Star and WRWD, saw the Renegades and IronBirds play 14 innings a night early. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow night, making up a rainout from June 21. Both games will be seven innings. First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 5:11 p.m. Joe Coppinger (2-2, 2.95) will take the mound for Aberdeen against Tony Peguero (3-2, 2.36) of Hudson Valley. Starting pitchers for Game 2, which will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opener, will be Travis Teeter (1-1, 2.33) for the IronBirds and Ryan McCally, making his debut for the 'Gades. For the ladies in the crowd, the Diamond in a Haystack Contest, sponsored by Belizzi Jewelers and WDST, will take place after Game 2.
