Staten Island Yankees News Release
[Staten Island, NY] - A fly ball out in foul territory led to a double play at the plate, gunning down the potential tying run, handing the Yankees' their seventh loss to the Cyclones on Tuesday night.
Down 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Horace Lawrence pinch hit for Tyson Hanish and singled to left field. Alexander Santa attempted a sacrifice bunt to move Lawrence to second, but hit the ball right to the pitcher, forcing Lawrence at second. Melky Cabrera, who was perfect on the evening, singled to right to put runners at first and second with one out. But the Yankees' hopes for a rally ended when Adam Shorts fouled into a double play, with Santa getting thrown out at the plate.
Brooklyn (21-7) struck first with two runs in the first inning, but Staten Island (8-19) battled back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second. John Urick led off the inning with a single, advancing to second on an infield single by Tyson Hanish, before scoring on a fielder's choice an error by Santa. Cabrera had his second hit of the evening, scoring Santa to knot the score at two.
Staten Island took the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the fourth on another RBI single by Cabrera.
Brooklyn took the lead for good in the top of the sixth, plating three runs.
The Yankees plated one more in the eighth to cap scoring.
Staten Island will travel to Brooklyn on Tuesday. They will return home on Thursday to face the Cyclones at 7:15 p.m.
