St. George RoadRunners News Release

TUCSON, ARIZ - Behind eight quality innings thrown by starter Mike Martin, the St. George RoadRunners (22-18, 47-33 overall) never trailed in Saturday's 6-2 victory over the host Tucson Toros (20-13, 37-34 overall) at Hi- Corbett Field. The triumph halted Tucson's claim to the 2nd half crown in the GBL's Southern Division.

Martin (2-1) scattered two runs on eight hits earning his second win in a starting role.

St. George took an early 1-0 lead in the first when A.J. Valentine blasted a solo home run to center field off Toro starter Jordan Muir (1-4).

Tucson responded with a two-out double plating Dustin Yount to tie the game 1-1 at the end of the first frame. The Toros had a one out, bases-loaded threat in the third inning ended when Martin induced a shallow fly ball from Andre Marshall and a ground out by Curt Miaso.

Jose Rodriguez led off the fourth inning with a double and scored two batters later on Henry Calderon's two-bagger to push the score to 2-1.

A three-run sixth gave the RoadRunners control of the game, 5-1. Calderon singled home Rodriguez after another lead-off double. Gary Harris and Ruddy Yan added RBI singles with two out.

The Toros scored a run in the bottom of the sixth when Dylan Parzyk crossed home on an error by Calderon at third.

Martin would retire the final seven batters he faced before handing the ball off to Julio Castro in the ninth. Castro allowed a single to Junior Spivey and walked Yount with two down before getting Lino Garcia to foul out to end the game.

St. George pounded out 14 hits in the victory with Valentine and Rodriguez each accounting for three.

Game three of the four-game set is Sunday night at 8:05pm Mountain time. Veteran southpaw Eude Brito (4-0, 3.75 ERA) will take the bump against Tucson lefty Vince Davis (4-2, 3.52 ERA).
