Victoria Seals News Release

Long Beach, CA - Hoping to play spoiler in their second visit to Blair Field, the Victoria Seals squared off against the Long Beach Armada on Saturday night. With the Fleet sending Ben Fox (5-7) to the hill, the Seals turned to Chris Bodishbaugh (1-4) in game two.

Grabbing an early lead in the top half of the second inning, the Seals opened the scoring when three consecutive singles from Brett Flowers, Gabriel Riley and Bret LeVier loaded the bases before an RBI fielder's choice from Billy Krause made it 1-0. The Armada responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame, though, cashing a lead-off double from J.J. Sherrill with a base hit from Matt Edgecombe.

Victoria broke the tie game once again in the sixth, using another string of three straight hits, this time from Jamar Hill, Josh Arhart and Brian Rios, along with a sacrifice fly from Riley en route to a 3-1 advantage. After both pitchers settled in to throw shutout baseball from the four inning to the seventh, the Seals extended their lead to three runs when an RBI single from Flowers brought in Hill who had led off the frame with a walk.

The home side then powered into the lead of the bottom of the seventh inning, receiving a pair of hits from Josh Womack and Brandon Howard to chase Seals reliever Graham Campbell from the game. With Anthony Pluta taking over on the mound, a walk to Omar Bramasco loaded the bases before a fielder's choice to Steve Moss and a single courtesy of Sherrill pulled the Armada within one.

After another walk, this time to Andy Bouchie, loaded the bases once again, Victoria handed the ball to Ethan Katz who promptly gave up a two-run single to Edgecombe, capping off a five-run seventh for Long Beach en route to a 6-4 lead.

With Victoria pulling back within one on the back of a sacrifice fly from Hill in the eighth frame, the visitors put the game-tying run to first with a lead-off base hit from Brian Rios in the top of the ninth. Looking to Koichi Misawa for the closer's ninth save of the year, Long Beach kept their playoff hopes alive when a fly ball from Krause left a pair on for the Seals, who lose by a 6-5 final score in game two.

Facing only four batters, Anthony Pluta takes his second loss on the year for Victoria while Scott Watson earns the victory in relief for the Armada. Matt Edgecombe proved to be the difference-maker on Saturday night, notching a pair of RBI's while J.J. Sherrill when 3-for-4 in the winning effort. In their final game before heading to the York Revolution of the Atlantic League, both Jamar Hill and Josh Arhart posted 1-for-3 outings.
