Castro Finishes Season at .410

The Calgary Vipers finished off the 2009 Golden Baseball League regular season on a high with a 9-5 victory over the Edmonton Capitals before 3695 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. Falling behind 4-1 after two innings the Vipers scored the next six runs of the game to take the lead for good and spilt the 16 game season series with Edmonton at eight wins apiece. Capping off an amazing season Nelson Castro went two-for-five to finish the year with the league's best batting average at .410. With the victory Calgary finishes the second half at 23-14 to go along with a 26-13 first half record good for a 49-27 overall mark. The Snakes won both halves of the North Division and also finished with the best record in the Golden Baseball League.

Wilver Perez also had a strong day at the plate for the Snakes going four-for-five with two runs scored and batted in while Colin Moro reached base all five times at the plate to lead the league on on-base percentage.

Erik Dessau (9-5) gave Calgary a good start throwing six innings while allowing four runs. Brian Oliver was solid in relief for the Snakes throwing a hitless and scoreless seventh inning while striking out two. Mac Suzuki also threw a scoreless and hitless inning for the Vipers out of the bullpen. Mike Johnson (2-4) received the loss in giving up 12 hits and six runs in seven innings.

Calgary opened the scoring in the top of the second inning as Perez doubled and Moro singled him home for a 1-0 lead.

Edmonton responded in the next half inning as Jose Morban walked, Chad Ehrnsberger doubled, an error allowed Morban to score, and Joe Jiannetti, Mitch Graham, and John Pasieka all plated runs with singles for a 4-1 advantage.

The Vipers quickly tied the game up at 4-4 in the top of the third as Jorge Mejia doubled, Castro doubled him in, Sergio Pedroza walked, and Perez collected a third two-base hit of the inning for two RBI.

In the top of the fifth inning Calgary took the lead back as Kit Pellow and Perez both singled, Moro cashed a run with a base hit, and Drew Miller made the score 6-4 with a RBI fielder's choice.

An insurance run was added in the top of the eight by the Snakes for a 7-4 lead as Kevin Price, Mejia, and Fehlandt Lentini all singled to load the bases, and Pedroza brought in a run with a sacrifice fly.

That run was matched by the Capitals in the bottom of the inning as Ehrnsberger and Jiannetti smacked back-to-back doubles for a 7-5 game.

Calgary scored again in the top of the ninth as Moro walked and Price launched his second home run of the season for a 9-5 advantage.

The two teams will now have a day off before Games 1 & 2 of the North Division Championship Series in Edmonton on Tuesday September 1st and Wednesday September 2nd with both games at 7:00 PM MDT.

The Vipers host Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series against the Capitals on Friday September 4th at 7:05 PM MDT. If necessary Games 4 & 5 will also be held at Foothills Stadium on Saturday September 5th at 4:00 PM MDT and Sunday September 6th at 3:00 PM MDT.
