August 30, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Long Beach Armada News Release

The Armada used seventh innings fireworks to score five runs and claim the lead and the win over the Victoria Seals Saturday night at Blair Field. Long Beach is now 18-18 in the second half and 38-36 overall.

With one out, Josh Womack began the five-run inning with a base hit. Brandon Howard followed with a hit of his own and Omar Bramasco walked to load the bases for Steve Moss. Moss hit a chopper to third and Brian Rios threw to second but Bramasco beat the throw and Moss was safe on the throw to first. Bases were still loaded for Sherrill and the score was now 4-2. Sherrill then singled to plate Howard and Bramasco, trying the game at 4-4. Andy Bouchie walked to load the bases and Matt Edgecombe came through with a clutch base hit to center, driving in Moss and Sherrill to give the Armada a 6-4 lead at the end of seven innings.

Kiochi came in to close out the game in the top of the ninth and did just that. He allowed a few runners to reach but closed it out to keep the Armada playoff hopes alive. Misawa earned his ninth save of the season.

Long Beach can qualify for it's GBL-record fourth postseason appearance with one more win against the Seals combined with two more loses by first-place Tucson over the final two days of the season.

Victoria struck first in the top of the second. With one out, Fox surrendered back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases for Billy Krause. Krause hit an RBI fielder's choice to give the Seals a 1-0 lead.

Long Beach answered in the bottom of the second. J.J. Sherrill hit a leadoff double and Andy Bouchie cashed him in with an RBI single up the middle to tie the ball game 1-1 at the end of two innings.

Fox found himself in more trouble in the top of the third. Designated hitter Matt Kavanaugh drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a Jamar Hill base hit. Catcher Josh Arhart followed with a single of his own to drive in Kavanaugh, reclaiming the lead for the Seals at 2-1. Brian Rios singled to load the bases and an out later, Gabriel Riley hit a sacrifice fly to plate Hill and push the lead to 3-1 at the end of three innings of play.

Both pitchers did a good job through the middle innings. From innings four through six, Fox struck out three and gave up just one hit. Heading to the seventh inning the game remained Victoria 3, Long Beach 1.

The Seals added to their lead in the seventh. After walking and hitting a batter to put runners on with no outs, Scott Watson replaced Fox. Fox's night ended with 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 BB and 5 Ks. After recording an out Watson gave up an RBI single to Brett Flowers, extending Victoria's lead to 4-1.

Victoria wasn't done scoring either. The Seals cashed in a leadoff walk with a single and a sac fly to cut the Armada lead to 6-5 at the end of eight innings of play.

Kris Honel will take the hill for the Fleet Sunday evening in game three of this four game series. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05pm.
