Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
FRISCO - Francis Martes spun seven sensational innings and Aaron West prevailed over two hotly-contested frames to complete Corpus Christi's 3-0 victory against the RoughRiders Saturday night before an announced crowd of 9,902 at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
The Hooks (3-2, 50-25), who lead the Texas League with 10 shutout wins, have claimed 12 of the last 14 meetings with Frisco (2-3, 40-31).
Martes (5-2) held the Riders to three hits and one walk, throwing 60 of 90 pitches for strikes. The 20-year-old struck out five, and retired 10 of the final 12 men he faced.
Martes owns a 1.62 ERA in his last six assignments.
Corpus Christi broke the scoreless tie in the sixth against David Perez (1-3). Alex Bregman worked a lead-off walk, stole second and scored on Derek Fisher's base hit to left field.
In the eighth, it was Fisher who swiped second before coming home when Chase McDonald punched a two-out single up the middle.
The Hooks added another insurance run in the ninth. Singles by Mott Hyde and Teoscar Hernandez led to a Bregman RBI double and a 3-0 edge.
West sidestepped a two-out single in the eighth and stranded two more in the ninth to pick up his ninth save of the year. The 26-year-old right-hander has allowed one run in his last 12 assignments, covering 24 2/3 innings.
The Hooks aim for a series victory Sunday night. Lefty Kent Emanuel (1-0, 2.70) goes for Corpus Christi. Frisco counters with Reed Garrett (2-1, 4.62). First pitch 6:05. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
