Kingsport- Kingsport Mets right-handed pitcher German Marte was named the Appalachian League player of the week for the fifth week of the season on Monday. The KMets are the rookie league affiliate of the New York Mets. This season is the parent club's 25th season in Kingsport.
A 6'1" 180 pound 20 year old from San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, Marte was nearly untouchable for the week. In three appearances Marte allowed just 2 hits in 4.2 innings pitched without walking a hitter and striking out an amazing 12. Marte was the winning pitcher in Wednesday's 7-2 victory over the Greeneville Astros in which he struck out all 6 batters that he faced. On the season Marte has a perfect 2-0 record with a 3.71ERA and 32 strikeouts in 26.2 innings pitched.
The KMets are on the road all of this week before returning home to host the Bluefield Orioles on July 30th. It will be Gastroenterology and Associates employee night as well as Tennessee State Parks night.
