Trenton Thunder News Release
(Richmond, VA) - Brett Marshall and three relievers combined on a four-hit shutout with 14 total strikeouts as the Trenton Thunder defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 1-0, Saturday night at The Diamond. Jose Gil's second-inning home run provided all the offense that Trenton (25-21) would need in the game that team team's combined for 25 strikeouts.
Marshall (5-2) struck out eight, one shy of his career high, in six shutout innings. He allowed four hits and walked four, throwing 96 pitches. Francisco Rondon struck out the side in the seventh and Ryan Pope fanned two in a perfect eighth. Ryan Flannery then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his seventh save.
Gil connected with one out in the second against Richmond starter Andy Reichard, a blast way out to left for his third home run of the season. The blast ended an 0-for-14 draught for the Trenton catcher.
Each team was limited to four hits on the night with no batter collecting more than one. Chris Gloor (3.1 innings) and Tom Vessella (3 innings) threw shutout relief for the Flying Squirrels after Reichard was lifted after 2.2 innings of work.
The Thunder and Flying Squirrels play game three of the series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch slated for 2:05 pm. Lefty Vidal Nuno (0-0, 0.00) will start for Trenton while righty Chris Heston (4-2, 0.61) will pitch for Richmond. Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 1:50 pm.
