Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
Richmond, VA - A quartet of Trenton Thunder (25-21) hurlers combined on a four-hit shutout of the Richmond Flying Squirrels (22-26) as the Thunder claimed a, 1-0 victory in front of 9,014 at The Diamond on Saturday night. It was the fifth time the Squirrels had been shutout on the year, as a season-high 14 Squirrels struck out in the ballgame.
Squirrels' right-hander Andy Reichard survived a scare in the first inning, but couldn't escape the second unscathed. With one out in the inning, Trenton catcher Jose Gil decked his third home run of the season. The solo-shot to left field was the only run tally in the ballgame.
On a pitch count in his second start of the season, Reichard (0-2) was lifted after just 2 2/3 innings. He allowed just the lone run on two hits, walked four and struck out two. He was doomed to his second of the season.
Meanwhile, Trenton right-hander Brett Marshall (5-2) was in control. He worked six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits. He walked three and struck out eight as he won for the fifth time on the season.
The Thunder used three relievers to complete the shutout of the Squirrels, and none allowed a Squirrel to reach base. Left-hander Francisco Rondon struck out the side in order in the seventh, and right-hander Ryan Pope turned in a perfect eighth. Right-handed closer Ryan Flannery also had no trouble in the ninth, retiring the side in order for his seventh save of the season.
The Richmond bullpen was also tremendous in relief as Left-handers Chris Gloor and Tom Vessella combined on 6 1/3 scoreless innings. Gloor handled 3 1/3 innings, his longest career relief outing. Vessella fired three shutout frames.
Game three of the four-game series is scheduled for 2:05 PM on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond. RHP Chris Heston (4-2, 0.61) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Vidal Nuno (0-0, 0.00) for Trenton. Pregame coverage will begin at 1:35 PM on Sports Radio 910 and SportsRadio910.com.
