Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CONN. (February 17, 2012) - Former Bridgeport Sound Tigers captain Mark Wotton has officially announced his retirement today from professional hockey.
"I had the privilege of playing hockey for 17 seasons and developed many life-long friendships that I cherish to this day," Wotton said. "It was an honor to serve as the Sound Tigers captain for each of the five seasons I played in Bridgeport. I look forward to continuing to work within the Islanders organization."
Wotton, a veteran of 1,072 professional games, finished his career with 388 points (95 goals and 293 assists).
The Foxwarren, MB, native played five seasons with the Sound Tigers and finished as the club's all-time leader in games played at 368. Wotton was appointed the sixth captain in Sound Tigers history prior to the 2006-07 season. At the completion of the 2006-07 season, Wotton was named the Sound Tigers Man of the Year for his tireless work in the local community.
He played in two AHL All-Star Classic weekends, the first in 1998 in Syracuse, NY, representing the Syracuse Crunch and 2011 in Hershey, PA, representing the Sound Tigers. Wotton was named the Eastern Conference captain at the 2011 AHL All-Star Game.
The 6'0, 196-pound defenseman played in 52 AHL Playoff games, posting one goal and 17 assists for 18 points. He was a member of the Hershey Bears Calder Cup Championship team in 2006.
Originally drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the tenth round (237th overall) of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, Wotton's career included NHL stints with the Canucks and Dallas Stars. Wotton played two years in the IHL with the Utah Grizzlies and Michigan K-Wings, as well as 14 seasons in the AHL with the Syracuse, Utah, Hershey and the Sound Tigers.
