Mariners Let Lead Slip, Fall to Lions

PORTLAND, ME - The Maine Mariners, proud affiliates of the NHL's Boston Bruins and AHL's Providence Bruins, fell 3-2 to the Trois-Rivieres Lions on Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Arena, failing to hold a one-goal lead in the third. Maine saw a seven-game point streak come to an end, wrapping up a 4-1-0 homestand.
Despite being outshot 16-5 in the opening period, the Mariners managed to come out of the frame with the lead. At 7:24 of the period, Xander Lamppa stole a puck away in the left corner and found Jacob Perreault in the slot, who ripped one over the shoulder of Hunter Jones for the only scoring of the first 20 minutes.
Trailing 1-0 headed to the third, the Lions scored three times in the first 5:23 of the final stanza to turn the game around. Nicholas Girouard finished a give-and-go with Anthony Beauregard to tie the game just 1:04 in. Cedric Desruisseaux gave the Lions the lead at 4:29 when he got free down the slot and finished a Morgan Adams-Moisan pass from behind the net. Less than a minute later, Adams-Moisan got a goal of his own, when he skated in on a breakaway and beat Brad Arvanitis' glove.
Jacob Hudson scored a power play goal just over a minute after Trois' three-goal burst to pull Maine back within one, but that was as close as the Mariners would get. Hunter Jones denied several quality chances in the final half of the third to help the Lions eke out the victory. He turned aside 28/30 while Arvanitis stopped 36 of 39.
The Mariners (38-17-6-2) and Lions will continue their series north of the border with three games at Colisee Videotron in Quebec this coming Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Mariners are back home one week from tonight, hosting the Adirondack Thunder on April 8 at 7:00 PM.
