PENSACOLA, Fla. - Ryan Marcuz tallied a pair of goals, but the Pensacola Ice Flyers (15-8-1) knocked off the Mississippi RiverKings (14-7-4) 4-3 in a shootout in Pensacola on Friday night.
The two teams traded goals in the first ten minutes of the opening period. Stephen Bucco took a pass from Michael Juola behind the defense and beat Garrett Sheehan on a breakaway to put Pensacola on top 1-0. With the teams skating four-on-four, Matt Harrington fed Mike Grace in the high slot who beat John McLean to tie the game at one 8:57 into the first.
But Pensacola scored twice in under two minutes to take a two goal lead into the first intermission. Adam Pawlick found Corey Banfield on a three-on-one and Banfield found the back of the net to put the Ice Flyers on top 2-1. One minute and fifty-five seconds later, Pawlick's wrist shot from the left wing circle beat Sheehan blocker side to give Pensacola a 3-1 lead.
In the second, the RiverKings battled back. Dean Willmott's slap shot bounced off Ryan Marcuz and found it's way to the back of the net to bring the RiverKings within one 10:37 into the second. The RiverKings notched the equalizer on the power play with Marcuz's deflection of an Ian Young shot that got past McLean to tie the game at three going into the third.
After a scoreless third period and overtime, the game went to a shootout. Matt Harrington and Linden Bahm scored in the first five rounds for the RiverKings and Banfield and Junior Harris scored for Pensacola to force sudden death. In round seven, Banfield beat Sheehan low to give the Ice Flyers the 4-3 victory.
Garrett Sheehan (1-3-3) stopped 25 of 28 shots against in the loss. John McLean (7-2-0) picked up the win after stopping 30 of 33 shots against.
The RiverKings went 1-4 on the power play while Pensacola was held scoreless on two power play opportunities.
The RiverKings return to Concorde Career College Ice at the Landers Center on Friday, January 15 as they look to Pack the House for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, presented by Belhaven University. All tickets are discounted $5 anywhere in the building and are available at the Landers Center box office or on Ticketmaster.
