Bradenton Marauders News Release
BRADENTON, Fla. - The Marauders beat the Tampa Tarpons in the first game of Friday's doubleheader, 3-1, before recording just one hit in a 4-1 loss in the nightcap at LECOM Park.
The game two loss ended a five-game winning streak for the Marauders (65-39) while snapping a four-game losing streak for the Tarpons (68-36). Bradenton remains three games behind the first-place Tarpons in the West Division standings.
In the first game, right-handers Luis Ortiz (5-3) and Nicio Rodriguez (2-1) battled with three scoreless innings to begin the afternoon. Ortiz worked around a pair of infield-singles and a walk, while Rodriguez retired 10 Marauders batters in a row after a Jackson Glenn leadoff single in the first inning. Dariel Lopez ended the streak with a single, and Jack Herman followed with a two-run homer to left field for a 2-0 Marauders lead.
Ortiz allowed a Benjamin Cowles RBI-double in the top of the sixth, bringing the Tarpons within one run, but Ortiz received crucial defensive support in the previous at-bat. With Antonio Gomez on first base for Tampa, Tyler Hardman doubled to left-center. Center fielder Jase Bowen grabbed the ball and threw to cutoff man Lopez, who made a perfect throw home on the fly to nab Gomez attempting to score.
Lopez added an RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth to stretch the Marauders lead to 3-1. Ortiz finished after six quality innings, striking out eight. Oliver Mateo earned the save by striking out the side in the seventh.
Rodriguez finished with a career-high nine strikeouts while walking none, but took the loss for Tampa.
Endy Rodriguez went 0-for-3 for the Marauders, ending his hitting streak at nine games.
The second game saw the Tarpons seize an early opportunity for a lead. After Jared Jones (3-4) got a flyout to begin the game and left fielder Jack Herman threw out Jasson Dominguez attempting to stretch a single into a double, shortstop Maikol Escotto threw wildly to first base on a would-be inning-ending groundout. Anthony Garcia followed with a single, and Benjamin Cowles followed with a three-run homer to right field.
Jackson Glenn led off the bottom of the first with a double for the Marauders, but after a Hudson Head walk, Tarpons starter Blane Abeyta (5-2) proceeded to retire the next 18 Bradenton batters in a row through the sixth inning, recording a career-high nine strikeouts.
Jones, meanwhile, recovered to hold Tampa scoreless across the next four innings, finishing with eight strikeouts over five innings. Justin Meis struck out six in two innings of relief for Bradenton, but allowed a solo homer in the seventh to Juan de Leon, extending Tampa's lead to 4-0.
With Wellington Diaz on in relief for Tampa in the seventh, the Marauders posed a late threat. Lopez led off with a walk for Bradenton, and after Herman lined out to the second baseman, Daniel Rivero and Ernny Ordonez drew consecutive walks, loading the bases. Diaz then struck out Escotto swinging, but followed with a walk to Kyle Wilkie, forcing home a run. But Francisco Acuna struck out swinging, ending the game and halting the Marauders' winning streak at five games.
By collecting hits in both games, Jackson Glenn has now reached base in each of his 16 games for the Marauders while hitting safely in 15 of the 16.
The series continues Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at LECOM Park. RHP Logan Hofmann will start for the Marauders against RHP Jason Parker for the Tarpons.
