Bradenton Marauders News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - The Bradenton Marauders, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, saw their seven game winning streak halted Monday, falling 5-2 to the St. Lucie Mets.
Bradenton mounted a late comeback, loading the bases with nobody out against St. Lucie's all-star closer Nick Carr. Carlos Paulino was hit by a pitch to start off. That was followed by singles from Aaron Baker and David Rubinstein. The Rubinstein single brought home Paulino to make it 5-2. All the more impressive was the fact that Rubinstein's hit came after he pinch hit for Calvin Anderson, who was lifted with an apparent injury, with two strikes already in the count.
The run scoring play was immediately followed by a walk to Evan Chambers to fill the bags. But Carr buckled down, striking out Elevys Gonzalez and popping up Adalberto Santos and Bengie Gonzalez to slam the door.
St. Lucie scored slowly in the game, plating one run in five separate innings. In the first and second the runs came after a batter reached on a fielder's choice, replacing a batter who had reached on a leadoff walk. Jefry Marte drove home Juan Lagares with a single in the first and Francisco Pena brought in Cesar Puello in the second.
The third St. Lucie run scored after Pedro Zapata reached with a leadoff error in the fifth. He stole second and got third on a wild pitch, scoring on a Robbie Shields hit. Marauders starter Brett Sinkbeil took the loss, allowing two earned on three hits over four and two thirds innings.
The final insurance runs for the Mets touched the plate on a sixth inning homer from Corey Vaughn, his second, and a sacrifice fly from Jefry Marte in the seventh.
Santos scored the only pre-ninth inning run for the Marauders, homering in the second. Bradenton left a runner at third base in the first and also had one thrown out at home in the third. It's the third time in three games Bradenton's lost a run at the dish. Ramon Cabrera was the runner gunned down Monday night. He left the game an inning later and did not reappear on the field, not even to catch in the bullpen.
Darin Gorski picks up the win, moving to 6-0. He tossed seven innings of six hit ball. He allowed one run and did not walk anybody.
The Marauders and Mets meet again Tuesday at 6pm at McKechnie Field. Brett Lorin throws against Kyle Allen. Radio coverage begins at 5:45 on 1280-AM WTMY. For more information call 941-747-3031 or visit online at BradentonMarauders.com.
