Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Masterful pitching and timely hitting helped the Fort Myers Miracle break out of their recent skid. They handed the Charlotte Stone Crabs a 4-0 defeat on Monday at Hammond Stadium.
The Miracle followed their Game 1 script and jumped in front with a first inning run. This time around, that lone run would prove to be enough behind starter Tom Stuifbergen.
Stuifbergen (3-4) tossed seven shut-out innings to continue an impressive showing in June. The righty is now a perfect 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA this month. His victory on Monday snapped Fort Myers' six-game losing streak.
Leading 1-0, Fort Myers staged a three-run, sixth inning rally to give Stuifbergen some breathing room. Nick Romero doubled to open the frame and was chased to third on Danny Rams' single. Ramon Santana followed with an RBI-double to plate the first of three runs in the inning.
Jamaal Hawkins capped the rally with a single through the drawn-in infield to bring home Rams, but got caught in a run-down between first and second. Santana was able to scamper home and make it 4-0 before Hawkins was tagged out at second to end the inning.
Kyle Lobstein (6-4) was charged with the loss. He surrendered four earned runs over 5 1/3 innings of work in dropping his second consecutive decision.
One bright spot for the Stone Crabs came late in the game, as reliever Scott Shuman worked two scoreless innings while striking out four Miracle hitters.
The series concludes on Tuesday as the Stone Crabs and Miracle once again meet at Hammond Stadium. Right-hander Merrill Kelly (5-3) will battle lefty Logan Darnell (4-1) of Fort Myers. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
