Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

The Hammerheads switched jerseys between games of the first ever home-and-home doubleheader against their Roger Dean Stadium roommates, but they couldn't change their luck, falling 4-2 to Palm Beach to remain winless in the second half.

A rainout of Sunday's "road" game against the Cardinals, with whom Jupiter shares the only two-team facility in Minor League Baseball, forced the unique double dip, with the game being made up before Monday's scheduled Hammerhead home game. Jupiter lost the opener 5-1.

In the night's home game, Jupiter finally showed the extra-base power it had been lacking, but the team's three doubles yielded just two runs when paired with three singles, one walk and some poor base running.

Already down 3-0 in the 3rd inning, J.L Ortiz and Jose Torres knocked out back-to-back doubles to score the first Hammerhead run. Dallas Poulk reached on a wild third strike, putting runners on the corners with one out, but he was caught stealing and a strikeout ended the inning.

Jeff Dominguez got Jupiter's third double of the night to lead off the next inning, scoring on Taylor Krick's two-out single, but Palm Beach starter Tyler Lyons again got a strikeout to end the inning, and the Hammerheads' production for the night.

Lyons, making his first start after 21 relief appearances, struck out five in four innings without issuing a walk. Palm Beach's bullpen was just as good, with Arquimedes Nieto and Keith Butler each striking out three, giving the Cardinals 11 strikeouts in the seven inning game.

Jupiter starter Edgar Olmos began the night looking like he could put up those kinds of numbers, striking out two batters in a perfect 1st inning. But he hit Xavier Scruggs with his first pitch of the 2nd frame, and Rainel Rosario drove him in with a triple. Rosario, who hit a three-run homer in the opening game, came home on a sacrifice fly.

Olmos gave up a run in the 3rd on Alan Ahmady's double, and served up Niko Vasquez's solo homer in the 4th. The left-hander fell to 2-8 on the year, with his last win coming back on May 1st.

The Hammerheads' last shot at a rally came with two outs in the 6th, when Jose Duarte drew his 53rd walk of the season. Kyle Jensen lined a single to center field and Duarte went first-to-third, but ran past a stop sign. Skidding to a stop, he tried to dive back to the bag, but was tagged out to end the inning.

With the pair of losses, Palm Beach extended its lead in the all-time Fins & Feathers Series to 98-75, and overtook the Hammerheads in the overall standings for this season. Jupiter will try to avoid the sweep and get its first win of the second half Tuesday night, once again serving as the road team against the Cardinals. Right-hander Matt Montgomery is slated to face Joe Kelly in a 6:35 p.m. start at Roger Dean Stadium.
