Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER (Monday, May 13) -The Clearwater Threshers couldn't put together enough runs to grab a win, falling 5-3 to the visiting Bradenton Marauders on Monday in front of 1,223 fans at Bright House Field.
The Threshers (19-17) fell despite a strong effort from starter Hoby Milner, who fanned seven over five innings in search of his fifth consecutive win. The loss to Bradenton (14-23) kept the Threshers two games back of the Dunedin Blue Jays in the Florida State League's North Division.
The Threshers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first against Bradenton starter Jeff Karstens. Second baseman Carlos Alonso and right fielder Kelly Dugan opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and a fly out to center by third baseman Maikel Franco advanced Alonso to third base. Left fielder Cameron Perkins hit a two-out chopper to third that he beat to first base, scoring Alonso and making it 1-0 for Clearwater.
Bradenton evened the score in the top of the second with two outs. Willy Garcia and Jacob Stallings clubbed back-to-back doubles to score the tying run, making it 1-1 heading to the bottom of the second. The Marauders added another run in the top of the third, as Carlos Mesa led off the inning with a solo homer to left off Threshers starter Hoby Milner, making it 2-1 Bradenton.
Clearwater tied things up in the bottom of the fourth inning against reliever Adrian Sampson (1-0). Perkins led off with a single to right, and swiped second to reach scoring position. A double from shortstop Jose Mojica just allowed Perkins to reach third, as Garcia nearly made the catch in right. Designated hitter Harold Martinez hit a Baltimore chop to third that stayed fair, allowing Perkins to score and even things up at 2-2.
The Marauders moved back ahead in the top of the fifth frame. Taylor Lewis led off the inning with a single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mesa. Alen Hanson singled Lewis to third base, and Lewis swiped home on a two-out pickoff move by Milner to score the go-ahead run and give Bradenton a 3-2 lead. Clearwater knotted it back up with one out in the bottom of the inning. Dugan smashed a 2-0 fastball over the right field wall for his second homer of the season, tying the score at 3-3.
Bradenton surged ahead again in the top of the eighth inning. Gonzalez led off with a double on a soft fly to left, and moved to third on a wild pitch by reliever Luis Paulino (0-3). With two outs, Paulino dealt another wild pitch, allowing Gonzalez to zip home. Dan Gamache cracked a single through the middle, and came home to score on a triple by Garcia, making it 5-3 Bradenton.
Milner took a no-decision, allowing three runs on seven hits and walking one while whiffing seven in five innings. Chris Nichols allowed a walk and a hit in two innings in his 2013 debut; he struck out one. Paulino took the loss, coughing up two runs on three hits and striking out three in two innings.
Karstens took a no-decision, allowing a run on four hits over three innings and fanning four. Sampson picked up his first win of the season, with two runs surrendered on six hits and a walk over five innings of relief. He struck out three. Joan Montero gave up one hit in a scoreless ninth for his first save.
