Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
JUPITER, FL- Lakeland turned the tables on Palm Beach Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium as they out hit the Cards 12-5 en route to a decisive 6-1 victory after getting shutout 7-0 on Monday.
Lakeland starting pitcher Drew VerHagen compiled an impressive six innings on the mound. The 6'6'' Texan retired the first 11 batters he saw in order before surrendering a 2-out single to RF Stephen Piscotty. VerHagen managed to continue strong, ultimately sitting down 21 of the 24 Palm Beach batters he faced through six frames (6IP, 2H, BB, 4K).
Trailing 2-0 heading into the top of the 6th, Palm Beach reliever Lee Stoppelman replaced Jose Almarante on the mound. To the apprehension of the Cardinals dugout, the move did not pay off as Stoppelman struggled. The Flying Tigers got the lefty for a pair of walks as well as a pair of singles and were able to capitalize on a bases loaded throwing error by SS Ronny Gil. Lakeland finished the inning with a 6-0 lead, proving to be more than enough to secure their 14th win of the season.
Palm Beach would prevent the shutout by scoring a run in the bottom of the 9th on three singles.
On the upside for Cards, Colin Walsh (2-4, R) and Stephen Piscotty (2-4) both had 2-hit nights while Danny Stienstra (1-4, RBI) extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
The Cardinals will play the third game of a four game series against the Flying Tigers tomorrow, 6:35 p.m. at Roger Dean Stadium. LHP Kyle Hald (1-2, 6.75 ERA) will face off against RHP Wilsen Palacios (1-3, 5.45 ERA).
