Marauders Fall in Game One of One Game Doubleheader

FORT MYERS, FL - The Bradenton Marauders, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, watched a double header turn into a single game Thursday night. The Marauders fell 6-5 in the front end and saw the back game get washed away with the rain.

In the first game Bradenton trailed 5-1 before mounting a comeback in the fifth. The Marauders used a nine-batter inning to plate four runs off starter BJ Hermsen and reliever Ricky Bowen. Robbie Grossman started it with a one-out single in front of a walk to rehabbing Alex Presley. Ramon Cabrera then doubled off the wall to score Grossman. The run was Robbie's 106th this season. The hit helped move Cabrera's hitting streak to 13.

The inning continued for the Marauders with a groundout by Evan Chambers to get the score to 5-3. Rehabber Chase d'Arnaud followed with a single to make it 5-4, bouncing Hermsen and bringing in Bowen. In a seven pitch at-bat, Elevys Gonzalez tied the game at five with an RBI single up the middle.

Fort Myers won it, however, in the bottom of the last. In the seventh Jamaal Hawkins began with a double, sacrificed to third by Jhon Goncalves. Duke Welker was summoned from the bullpen and induced the needed grounder from James Beresford. Welker caught Hawkins between third and home, but his throw to Gonzalez was dropped, allowing Hawkins to score the winning run 6-5.

The second game played into the top of the fourth inning before being cancelled due to rain. All action was wiped from the books. The game was not suspended and is not scheduled to be made up. The teams do not meet again this year.
