Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, FL (August 11th, 2011) - Jamaal Hawkins ignited an unorthodox walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh to lead the Miracle to a 6-5 victory over the Bradenton Marauders on Thursday night at Hammond Stadium.

Leading off the final inning with a double down the right field line off Bradenton reliever Zachary Foster, Hawkins was sacrificed to third on a bunt from Jhonathan Goncalves.

Marauders manager Carlos Garcia went to his bullpen and brought in closer Duke Welker. With a 2-0 count, James Beresford hit a tapper back to the mound. Welker grabbed the ball and Hawkins was hung up on the base path. Welker began the rundown with a throw to third, but Elevys Gonzalez dropped the ball. Hawkins raced for home and slid safely around a Ramon Cabrera tag to send the Miracle to a 6-5 victory.

Miracle reliever Ricky Bowen (1-2) earned the win with 2.1 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and two strikeouts. Bowen came on in relief of B.J. Hermsen in the fifth inning. Hermsen, making his first start in the Florida State League, gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits and fanning four.

The Miracle took a 5-1 lead in the third inning with a three hit, three run inning including an RBI double from Josmil Pinto and a two-run, two-out single by Dan Rohlfing.

The Marauders answered with four runs in the fifth with four consecutive RBI at-bats from Cabrera, Evan Chambers, Chase d'Arnaud, and Gonzalez.

Foster (1-1) took the loss after pitching 3.1 innings in relief of Jhonathan Ramos.

Game two of a scheduled double-header was canceled with two outs in the top of the fourth inning due to a large storm system moving through the area.

The Miracle (53-63, 18-27) will begin a three game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. against the Palm Beach Cardinals at Hammond Stadium. Listen every pitch on www.miraclebaseball.com with the 'Voice of the Miracle' Alex Margulies and Brice Zimmerman.
