DENVER - After building a big lead then seeing it disappear, the Colorado Mammoth reeled off four goals in a 70-second span late in the game to finish off an impressive 15-11 victory over the Portland LumberJax on Thursday night.
The Mammoth (5-1) remained unbeaten in three games at home this season and solidified its position in first place of the National Lacrosse League's West Division. The LumberJax (2-3) lost their third consecutive game.
"It was an up-and-down, very physical game," Mammoth coach Gary Gait said after the Mammoth and LumberJax racked up 57 penalty minutes in front of 14,388 fans at Pepsi Center. "I was really impressed with the way we kept our composure and focus at the end of the game."
After Portland's Ryder Bateman tied the score at 9-9, Mammoth forward Jamie Shewchuk scored twice to put the Mammoth ahead for good. After a Portland goal cut the advantage to 11-10, the Mammoth put the game out of reach with two goals from forward Mike Law, Matt Taylor's second goal and Shewchuk's third goal of the game.
It was the Mammoth's first victory over the second-year LumberJax, who won both meetings last season.
Mammoth forward Dan Carey led all scorers with six points on three goals and three assists. His second goal of the game gave the Mammoth a 6-1 lead with less than nine minutes remaining in the first half. After a Portland goal, Ben Prepchuk scored his second of the night to push the Mammoth's lead back to five goals, but then a drought set in. The Mammoth was held scoreless for the next 20:27 as the LumberJax crawled back into the game, eventually tying the score at 7-7. Finally, Taylor scored his first goal in a Mammoth uniform to regain the lead for his team. Carey's third goal of the game made it 9-7, but Portland answered to make it 9-8 heading into the fourth quarter.
Mammoth captain Gavin Prout chipped in with two goals and two assists. Goaltender Gee Nash earned the victory with 46 saves on 57 shots. Jed Prossner and Mike Hominuck led Portland with two goals and three assists each. Goaltender Dallas Eliuk took the loss with 36 saves on 51 shots.
The Mammoth dominated the first quarter, building a 3-0 lead on goals by Carey, Brian Langtry and Prepchuk.
