February 1, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release
Chicago Wolves left wing Steve Maltais (MAHL-tay) has earned the CCM American Hockey League's Milestone of the Month award for January after recording his 600th professional goal on Jan. 19 against the Hamilton Bulldogs.
The only player to skate in all 11 seasons with the Wolves since the club's inaugural 1994-95 season, Maltais has registered nine goals in the National Hockey League, 208 in the AHL and 383 in the International Hockey League.
The 36-year-old forward is just one goal shy of notching 450 regular-season goals with the Wolves. He is tied for first on the team with 26 assists, and ranks second with 39 points and fourth with 13 goals in 47 games this season.
Last year, Maltais shared first on the team with 31 goals, his ninth 30-goal season in 10 years with the Wolves, and was named a 2004 AHL Second Team All-Star.
Chicago's all-time leader in goals (449); assists (480); and points (929), Maltais earned his second professional scoring title in 2002-03 with 86 points (30G, 56A) in 79 games. He also won the IHL scoring title with 90 points (44G, 46A) in 1999-2000. The 6-foot-2-inch, 230-pound forward has led or shared first on the Wolves in goals in eight of his 10 seasons and has paced the league in goals five times.
Maltais has helped lead the team to the 1998 and 2000 Turner Cup Championships and the 2002 Calder Cup Championship. The Arvida, Quebec, native has amassed 58 goals, 58 assists and 116 points in 124 postseason games, which includes a career-high and AHL-leading 12 playoff goals in 2002.
Maltais notched four consecutive 100-point seasons (1995-1999), highlighted by a professional career-high 122 points (56G, 66A) in 1995-96. He has collected four 50-goal campaigns, including a career-high 60 in 1996-97.
The 10-time Wolves captain represented Chicago in seven IHL All-Star games and owns the IHL record for most points scored in All-Star Game appearances (12). Maltais was named to the IHL First All-Star Team three times (1994-95, 1998-99 and 1999-2000) and the IHL Second All-Star Team twice (1995-96 and 1996-97).
Maltais has played parts of six seasons in the NHL with the Washington Capitals (1989-1991); Minnesota North Stars (1991-92); Tampa Bay Lightning (1992-93); Detroit Red Wings (1993-94); and Columbus Blue Jackets (2000-01).
In recognition of the CCM AHL Milestone of the Month, Maltais will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming home game.
