Quad City Mallards News Release
QUACK TRACKS
Opening Weekend
The Mallards last weekend began the season by winning two of three games. The Mallards required more than the regulation 60 minutes to secure that pair of victories. Quad City won its season opener in overtime last Friday in Tulsa and, after dropping its home opener to the Oilers one night later, defeated Wichita in a shootout yesterday on home ice.
He's Baaack
Patrik Levesque made an emphatic return to the Mallards by producing a team leading five points (one goal and four assists) over three opening weekend games. Levesque scored once and picked up a pair of assists in last Friday's season opener- his first game with the Mallards since being traded by Quad City to Mississippi early in the 2010-11 campaign. Levesque added two assists in yesterday's win. While Levesque played only briefly last season (three games at the start of the campaign for Tulsa), bridging last year and this, he has now piled up 10 points in his last six games.
600 Club
Shayne Toporowski's next point will be the six hundredth of his eighteen-year career. After picking up an assist in last Friday's season opener and scoring his first Mallard goal one night later, Toporowski has now totaled 256 goals, 343 assists and 599 points in 958 career games.
No Ordinary Joe
Joe Palmer was in goal for both of the Mallards' wins last weekend. Palmer stopped 71 of 76 shots for a .934 save percentage and posted a 2.32 goals against average. He now ranks second in the league on the young season in save percentage and third in goals against average.
The Mick
Mickey Lang started the campaign exactly where he left off last season. Lang was named CHL Rookie of the Month and First Star for March after scoring nine goals and totaling 22 points in final 13 games of 2011-12. After adding an assist Saturday night to the two goals- including the overtime winner- he scored in last Friday's season opener, he has now piled up 11 goals and 25 points in his last 16 games.
Three for Four
Obi Aduba, the lone fourth year Mallard, leads the club with three goals. Aduba scored once and added an assist in last Friday night's win and yesterday provided the deciding shootout goal against Wichita after also scoring in regulation.
Easy E
Rookie Eddie Effinger is the only Mallard to have recorded points in each of the team's first three games. Effinger picked up assists in each of Quad City's first two tilts before scoring his first career goal yesterday.
Workin' Overtime
The Mallards secured their first two wins of this season after then end of regulation after also enjoying considerable success in games decided in overtime or the shootout last year. The Mallards last season went 5-1 in games settled in overtime and 6-1 in shootouts.
Special Teams
Quad City ranks second in the league in penalty killing (85.7 percent), having survived 12 of its opponents' 14 man advantages. The Mallards failed to convert any of their nine power plays over the weekend.
Three in Three
Beginning Friday, the Mallards will play three games in three nights for a second straight weekend. In all, the Mallards will play three games in three evenings eight times this season- just as they did last year.
Home Sweet Home
Yesterday's game was the second in a stretch that will see the Mallards play six of seven contests on home ice. The Mallards rebounded with yesterday's victory over Wichita after one night earlier against Tulsa dropping their home opener for the fourth straight year.
Head-to-Head
The Mallards and Blaze this weekend kick off their 18-game season series. Quad City will see more of Bloomington this year than any other CHL team. The two clubs this season will meet twice as many times as they collided last year. The Mallards took seven of nine from the Blaze in 2011-12.
Ins and Outs
The Mallards Saturday night acquired defenseman Derek Matheson from the Allen Americans in exchange for future considerations...Today the Mallards activated forwards Jeremy Boyer, Mike Hellyer and Mike Stinziani and defenseman Mitch McColm while waiving forwards Marcello Ranallo and Mike Owens and defensemen Ed Campbell and Aaron Schmit.
