Thunder lightening: The Blaze pulled off two hard-fought victories over the Wichita Thunder, winning 6-4 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday. The Thunder scored Friday's first goal just 45 seconds into the game and led 3-1 late in the period, but Jon Booras led the Blaze with two goals and three assists and Tyler Gron scored the game-winning tally with his first professional goal in his Blaze debut. On Saturday, the Blaze surged out to a 3-0 lead on goals from Travis Granbois, Jeff Winchester and Jesse Dudas as Pier-Olivier Pelletier stopped 46 Wichita shots.
Duck hunting : The Blaze get familiar this weekend with the other Illinois entry in the Central Hockey League with three games against the Quad City Mallards. Friday's game is at U.S. Cellular Coliseum while the Saturday and Sunday affairs are in Moline at iWireless Center. The Blaze were 2-6-1 against the Flock last season, winning once in each building. The Mallards opened their season with a 4-3 overtime win at Tulsa on Friday, a 4-1 loss on Saturday to Tulsa in Moline and a 3-2 shootout win over Wichita at home on Sunday. Obi Aduba scored three times for the Mallards while Patrik Levesque recorded a goal and four assists to lead the Flock with five points. Joe Palmer recorded both wins in goal with a .934 save percentage.
Streaking: The Blaze are on their longest winning streak in their history after capturing their third straight win on Saturday. It is also the first time that the Blaze have not lost in a home weekend series.
Milestone Jonny: Milestone games have been good to Jon Booras. In his 400th game in a Bloomington sweater on Friday, he recorded two goals and three assists. In his 400th professional game late last season at Evansville, Booras scored his 150th goal as part of a hat trick.
Addition over subtraction: Blaze player ratings have been far more plus than minus in the first four games. Only four players have a plus-minus rating in the negative range, all -1. Jon Booras, Matthew Larke and Nicholas Rioux lead the team with +4 ratings.
Let's get physical : Defenseman Tysen Dowzak leads the Blaze with 31 penalty minutes, with all but two minutes meted out for roughing or fighting.
Junior Blaze update : The Junior Blaze matched their pro counterparts with a sweep of a pair of weekend games at Rhinelander, Wis. The Junior Blaze lead 2-1 early in Saturday's third period on goals by Jacob Lourash and Matt Donley before the host Street Cats tied the game at 2-2, but Kyler Schmor registered the game-winner less than two minutes after Rhinelander tied the contest and held on for a 3-2 victory. On Sunday, the Junior Blaze saw a 3-1 lead late in the second period slip away to force overtime, but Steven Smoltz scored the game-winner just 1:37 into the extra period for a 5-2 victory to improve to 7-2-0. Donley lead the Junior Blaze with 15 points (2g, 13a) while Schmor, Lourash and Smoltz share the team lead in goals with five. The Junior Blaze host the Hartland Hounds on Friday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m.
