Three Things You Need to Know
1.) Trick-or-Treat- Halloween is Wednesday night and the CHL will celebrate the ghouls and goblins with a pair of games. The Fort Worth Brahmas (1-1-1) will play in Arizona against the Sundogs (1-1-2) and the first place Tulsa Oilers (3-1-1) will play at the Allen Americans (3-1-0). The Brahmas have owned the all-time series against the Sundogs going 12-3-2 in the 17 previous meetings. The Americans lead the all-time series against the Oilers going 10-6-1 but the Oilers start this season is their best since the 2003-04 season.
2.) Blaze, Booras Off to Hot Starts- The Bloomington Blaze (3-1-0) are off to a scorching start as they are currently tied for second in the league with six points. Bloomington dropped their season opener to Rapid City but has since rattled off three straight wins outscoring the opposition 14-8 (the win streak is the longest in the team's brief history). The Blaze swept the Wichita Thunder this past weekend topping the defending Governors' Cup Champs 6-4 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday. Veteran forward Jon Booras leads all skaters with 10 points (3-7=10) on the season. Bloomington will meet their rivals, the Quad City Mallards this weekend in three games (@ BLM on Friday and @ QDC on Saturday and Sunday).
3.) Rushing Past the Cutthroats- The Rapid City Rush began their instant rivalry against the expansion Denver Cutthroats this past weekend with back-to-back wins. On Friday, the Rush topped the Fish by a 3-2 score and on Saturday, Rapid City beat Denver 4-2. Rapid City has moved out to six points with a 3-1 record tying them for second in the CHL. The Cutthroats are off to a rough start with just one win in their first four games. Rapid City hosts Arizona in a pair of games this weekend and Denver hosts Fort Worth on Friday and Saturday nights.
By the Numbers
400: The number of games that veteran forward Jon Booras has played in the city of Bloomington (with the PrairieThunder and the Blaze). Booras has the knack of using the big stage to shine as during his 400th game with the Blaze he scored two goals with three assists in the Blaze's win over Wichita. Last season in his 400th professional game, Booras netted a hat trick in his team's win over Evansville.
One-Timers
-Prior to Sunday's game in Tulsa, the Fort Worth Brahmas signed forward T.J. Fox. The forward was second on the team in scoring last season with 55 points and the team leader with 37 assists and a +21 plus/minus rating.
-Tulsa forward Gary Steffes was named the Oakley CHL Player of the Week scoring two goals with three assists and a +4 plus/minus rating. Steffes is off to his best start in his three years with the Oilers sitting with seven points (3-4=7). Steffes leads the Oakley Three Stars race by being named the first star three times so far this season.
-The Quad City Mallards completed their busy weekend with an overtime win on Friday night in Tulsa and a shootout win on Sunday against Wichita. Sandwiched between was a loss at home to the Oilers. The Flock used five points (1-4=5) from Patrick Levesque and three goals from Obi Adubi to push the offense and solid goaltending by Joe Palmer (2-0 with a 2.32 GAA and a .934 save%).
-After five games last season, the Wichita Thunder were 4-1-0 but this season has been a bit more of a struggle with the team going 1-3-1. Three of the Thunder's four losses have been by one goal. Last season, Wichita was 19-6-3 in one-goal contests.
-Despite allowing the first goal in all four of their games this season, the Missouri Mavericks have earned points in three of those four games going 2-1-1.
-After not allowing a power play goal in their first three games, the Allen Americans finally gave up a man advantage goal in Saturday's loss at Fort Worth. Allen has stopped 22 of 23 opponent power plays so far, tops in the league (95.7%).
-Denver is even in scoring against the opposition in the first two period (10 goals for and 10 goals against) but have been outgunned 8-2 in their third period.
