QUACK TRACKS

Sweep

The Mallards dropped both ends of a season-opening home-and-home series with the Fort Wayne Komets last weekend. The Mallards opened the season with a 6-2 home loss last Friday before falling 3-1 last Saturday in Fort Wayne.

Double Dip

The Mallards have started the season with consecutive losses for the first time since they dropped the first three games of the 2010-11 Central Hockey League campaign.

Road Show

The Mallards last Saturday fell in their first road game of the season after winning each of their last two away openers and going 4-0-1 in their last five. Prior to last Saturday, the Mallards last lost their first road game when they fell to the St. Charles Chill in Missouri 6-5 in a shootout early in their final CHL campaign on October 27, 2013. Last Saturday was also the first time the Mallards failed to pick up a point in their away curtain-raiser since they were edged 3-2 in regulation by the Gems in Dayton on October 22, 2010 in the Flock's first ever CHL away game.

Opening Night

With last Friday's loss the Mallards are now 10-9-1 all-time in season in openers.

Home Hazards

The Mallards have now suffered regulation defeats in each of their eight home openers since the team returned to the ice in 2009 following the two-year interregnum during which the Quad City Flames competed in the American Hockey League. The Mallards are also winless (0-8-1) in their last nine home openers. The Flock last started its home slate with a win on October 21, 2005 while in the United Hockey League when it downed the Motor City Mechanics 4-3 in a shootout.

Breakthrough

By opening the scoring at 10:41 of the first period last Friday, Justin Kovacs ended a drought that had seen the Mallards go without a goal in each of their prior two home openers and go a total of 141:55 in home-opening game time without scoring. A 1-0 loss to Tulsa on October 23, 2015 in last season's Quad Cities opener followed a 3-0 home whitewashing at the hands of Rapid City on October 24, 2014 in the Mallards' first ECHL game. Kovacs' goal was the Mallards' first in their first home contest since Mike Stinziani scored at 8:46 of the third period on October 19, 2013 in a home- and season- opening 6-4 loss to the Rush.

Doubling Down

Alex Petan last weekend picked up assists in each of his first two professional games. Linemates Kovacs and Sam Warning both had a goal and an assist last weekend.

Firsts

Kovacs scored in his Mallard debut last Friday while Nathan Todd recorded an assist while suiting up for the Flock for the first time in the opener. Todd's point was the first of his career.

Between the Pipes

Adam Vay took the loss in his Mallard goaltending debut last Friday. Vay gave up five goals on 23 Fort Wayne shots before being replaced by C.J. Motte- who also made his Mallard debut in the opener- at the start of the third period. Motte last Saturday made 26 saves while suffering the loss in his first Mallard start.

Letter Men

Chris Francis took over as Mallards captain this season from the retired Darren McMillan. Monfredo- who also wore the "A" last season- and Petan are the Mallards' alternate captains.

On the Road

Last Saturday's game was the first of three straight on the road for the Mallards and the first in a stretch that will see them play five of seven away from home.

Special Teams

The Mallards both scored and allowed one power play goal in each of their first two games. They went 2-for-7 on man advantage for the weekend while Fort Wayne went 2-for-5.

Head to Head

The Mallards will see the Rush just once more after this weekend's two-game set in Rapid City. The Rush will make its lone visit of the season to the iWireless Center on February 4. The Mallards last season went 4-2-0 against the Rush and split a pair of games in Rapid City. All-time, the Mallards have gone 24-13-3 against the Rush and 10-8-2 at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
