Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, IL â The rivalry between the Quad City Mallards and the Flint Generals is as old as the Mallards franchise itself. It began when Flint swept the expansion team from Quad City in the first round of the 1996 Colonial Cup playoffs. It heated up when the Mallards beat the Generals in an epic battle for the 1997 Championship. It boiled over when the Mallards toppled the Generals again in 1998 to win a second straight Colonial Cup. Flint got its revenge by sweeping Quad City in the 2000 finals.
This season added a new chapter to the rivalry, as the Generals showed their frustration by committing 97 minutes worth of penalties when the Mallards beat them 6-1 in the Nov. 8 home opener at The MARK of the Quad Cities. At game's end, Flint players left the ice through the Mallards' exit and a scuffle ensued in the hallway. Fines and suspensions followed.
What's next? You'll know when you go to The MARK this Saturday for the Mallards vs. the Generals at 7:00 p.m.
At the game, fans will have the opportunity to Meet Baseball Great Tommy John, presented by Fox Sports Net. In a major league record 26 seasons as a pitcher with the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, California Angels, and Oakland A's, John won 288 games. He ranks sixth in baseball history with 700 starts and struck out 2,245 batters in his career. He made history when he had a tendon transplanted from his right forearm to his left pitching elbow to fix a career-threatening injury. After missing the 1975 season, he earned baseball's Comeback Player of the Year award in 1976 and went on to win 20 or more games in three of the next four seasons while appearing in two World Series. The surgery he underwent is now known as Tommy John surgery.
Tommy John will speak at The MARK at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, part of Church Night, in which all church groups in attendance get discount tickets and receive special recognition at the game. He will then meet fans and sign autographs. To get your church group involved, call the Mallards Group Sales Department at (309) 764-PUCK.
Also at Saturday's game, fans will dance for the chance to win free airline tickets in the AirTran Dancing for Destinations contest. The best dancers will be picked out of the crowd and will go on the ice to try to fly a paper airline closest to the center of the ice to win two free tickets on AirTran, flying out of the Quad City Airport.
Good seats are available for Saturday's game. Tickets are on sale at The MARK box office, at all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at (563) 326-1111, and online by following the Tickets link at www.qcmallards.com. For more information, call the Mallards at (309) 764-PUCK.
