Mallards Pursue Eighth Straight against Rafters
June 23, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, Wis. - Steamrolling their way to two impressive victories over the Wisconsin Woodchucks (9-18) in Monday's double-header at Athletic Park, field manager Donnie Scott and the Madison Mallards (17-11) return to the Duck Pond to pursue their eighth-consecutive win Tuesday evening against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (12-14). Tonight will be the first of a home-and-away series between the South Division opponents, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Monday evening's twin bill saw the Mallards explode for a 16-for-52 (.307) output with the lumber across both seven-inning games, including doubles from Logan Regnier (Central Michigan), Anthony Gonsolin (St. Mary's College) and Scott Tyler (Illinois State). Andrew Beckwith (Coastal Carolina) and Hever Bueno (Arizona State) ceded one run and whiffed 10 batters across 10 combined innings as Madison's starting pitchers, while Mike Kaelin (Buffalo) cashed in his third save in the nightcap, lengthening his scoreless streak to 14.2 to begin his inaugural campaign in the Northwoods League.
Tonight, Westin Wuethrich (Madison College) will look to carry over Madison's effective pitching when he tabs his third start of the summer against the Rafters. The 6-foot-2 right-hander originally from Greenwood, Wis., has manufactured an admirable beginning to his first stint with the Mallards, going 1-1 with a 0.79 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, .184 batting average against across his first three games (11.1 IP). Wuethrich received a well-deserved winning decision for his June 17 effort against Kalamazoo, spinning a five-inning shutout with four strikeouts and two hits in a 6-1 Mallards victory.
To counter, Wisconsin Rapids will assign right-handed pitcher Brian Russell (College of Staten Island) with his fifth starting appearance of 2015. Russell, a native of Staten Island, N.Y., who stands at 6-foot-3, carries a 1-0 record, 3.91 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and .253 opponent batting average across 20.1 innings into tonight's contest. As a sophomore this past spring, Russell led his collegiate club in ERA (1.62), strikeouts (56), complete games (3) and opponent average (.195).
Mike's Mastery Continues - Kaelin turned in another dominant late- relief outing in Monday's series final in Wausau, fanning all three hitters he faced without conceding a hit, walk or run. The power-armed prospect ranks seventh in the league in strikeouts (27) despite all of his 14.2 innings coming out of the bullpen.
In place the previously scheduled Maynard LEGO Giveaway, tonight will feature a Zimbrick Honda Hat giveaway while supplies last. Fans will receive a voucher for a Maynard LEGO. For tickets, call the Mallards ticket office at 608-246-4277 or visit www.MallardsBaseball.com for more information.
