Mallards Overcome Missouri 3-2 in O.T.; Flock Grabs Share of Second Place
December 17, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - Justin Chwedoruk scored just 12 seconds in overtime to give the host Quad City Mallards a 3-2 win over the Missouri Mavericks Saturday night. With the victory, the Mallards moved into a tie for second place in the Central Hockey League's Turner Conference, improved to 7-1-1 in the month of December and completed a sweep of their weekend home-and-home series with the Mavericks.
Brandon Marino set up the game winner by stripping Missouri goaltender Gerry Festa behind the Maverick net and feeding Chwedoruk, who buried the puck from the doorstep.
The Mavericks forced overtime when Dave Pszenyczny pounced on a rebound and scored the tying power play goal with 2:58 left in regulation.
Earlier in the third period, it seemed the Mallards might be on their way to a regulation win after the Flock struck twice in a minute and thirty seconds to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead. Jeremy Boyer pumped a rebound home to even the score at one at 9:46 of the third; at 11:16 Jared Brown cut into slot to sweep the go-ahead goal past Festa.
The Mallards spent much of the evening operating from behind after Dale Mahovsky produced the game's opening goal just 55 seconds into the first period with a backhander from the slot.
The Mallards needed late offense to secure the win despite outshooting Missouri 35-17 on the night and 26-10 over the final two periods plus overtime.
The Mallards next play at home next Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Bloomington Blaze. All Tuesday home games this season are "$2 Tuesdays" and feature $2 soft drinks and beer at i wireless Center concession stands.
