Mallards Offense Subdued by Growlers in Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo, MI - July 6, 2014. Superb pitching from Kalamazoo Growlers (1-4, 14-26) starter Ryan Smoyer (Notre Dame) downed the Madison Mallards (4-2, 22-17) tonight in Kalamazoo, Michigan by a score of 4-1.

Smoyer gave up two hits in his one run performance, walking none while striking out five in eight complete innings of work to get his fifth win of the year.

The Mallards generated their only run without a base hit in the fourth inning after shortstop Trace Tam Sing (Washington State) was hit by a pitch and came in later to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of third baseman Trent Higginbothem (North Florida).

Right fielder Connor Marabell (Jacksonville) and center fielder Will Krug (Illinois) would add the only two hits for the Mallards offense, Marabell's coming in the fourth and Krug's in the eighth inning.

The Growlers scored two runs in the second, one in the fourth and one in the seventh inning and were led offensively by left fielder Nick Yarnall (Pittsburgh), who was 2-for-3 with two runs, a triple, and one RBI.

Mallards starter A.J. Bogucki (North Carolina) went five innings, scattering three runs on eight hits while walking and striking out one.

The Mallards continue their five game road trip tomorrow night against the Kalamazoo Growlers (0-3, 13-22) at 7:05 pm. They then travel to Wisconsin Rapids for a six game home and home series against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (0-3, 12-23). The Mallards return to the "Duck Pond" on July 11th to face the Rafters at 7:05 pm.
