Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, Wis. - On Monday, the Madison Mallards saw their five-game winning streak conclude with a 1-0 loss to the Lakeshore Chinooks (4-3) at Kapco Park. Though the losing effort dropped Madison's record to 5-1, the Mallards will maintain ownership of the top spot in the Northwoods League's South Division entering Tuesday.
Westin Wuethrich (Madison College) received the losing decision on the mound despite a solid performance for Mallards field manager Donnie Scott, allowing one earned run on five hits, two walks and three strikeouts across 5.1 innings. Josh Pierce (Central Michigan) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief, while Mike Kaelin (Buffalo) fanned three batters in 1.1 shutout frames between the eighth and ninth innings.
J.J. Gould (Jacksonville) led the Mallards offense with a double on his way to a 2-for-4 batting line against Chinooks starting pitcher Gavin Downs, who logged all nine innings for Lakeshore. Logan Regnier (Central Michigan), Anthony Gonsolin (St. Mary's College) and Tony Butler (Madison College) were responsible for the remainder of Madison's hits.
With their first loss of the season behind them, the Mallards will turn their collective attention toward the finale of their away series with Lakeshore, which is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. Tune in to 100.5 FM ESPN Radio Madison to follow all the action and follow the Mallards on Twitter at @MadisonMallards for notes and updates.
The Mallards will return to the Duck Pond on Wednesday, June 3 against the Green Bay Bullfrogs on Joey's Song Epilepsy Awareness Night. There will be a pre-game skydiving and tandem skydive giveaway presented by Great Lakes Skydiving, with Mallards players wearing purple jerseys to be auctioned off during the game.
