Madison Mallards News Release

MADISON, WI - The Green Bay Bullfrogs defeated the Madison Mallards 15-3 in front of a season-high 6,750 fans at the "Duck Pond" Friday night.

The win was the second in as many days against the Mallards for the Bullfrogs, who improve to 10-6 on the season. With Battle Creek's loss to Eau Claire, Green Bay moves into first place in the South Division of the Northwoods League.

Not only did the Bullfrogs beat the Mallards to sweep the home-and-home two-game series, but they did so in convincing fashion, outscoring the Ducks by a total of 24 to 3 in the 18 total innings played.

The game was put out of reach from the get-go, as Green Bay scored six runs in the top half of the first number off of Mallards' starter Ryan Bores (Cuyahoga Community College). Only two of those runs were earned however, as an error by Madison third baseman Andrew Barna (Davidson) proved to be very costly.

Green Bay also scored in innings two, five, six, and nine. They duplicated their first inning feat by scoring six more runs in the final frame.

The suddenly-dominant offense of the Bullfrogs hit two home runs Friday and tied their season-high with fifteen hits, a number they had reached in Thursday's win over Madison.

One of the home runs was hit by Green Bay first baseman Nik Balog (San Francisco). Balog went 3-for-6 for the game and had three RBI. Matt Ozanne (Santa Clara), Billy Moon (Gonzaga), and newly-activated catcher Duncan McAlpine also tallied multiple hits. Alec Mehrten, like Balog, tallied three RBI, and David Popkins (UC San Diego) hit a solo home run.

For the second night in a row, the Mallards, who came into the two-game set with Green Bay as the league leader in team batting average, got shut down by a solid group of young pitchers.

The Mallards did not score until the eighth inning, going 20 innings without scoring a run. Justin Scanlon (Michigan State) drove in new Mallards' catcher Jake Page (Madison College) to finally put the Mallards on the board. The scoring concluded in the ninth as Mike McQuillan (Iowa) walked to score J. Golden (Blackhawk College).

Earning the win for the Bullfrogs was Zak Hermans (Princeton). Hermans was dominant, going six full innings, allowing no runs on only one hit. He walked no one and struck out eight, facing two over the minimum through six. Hermans needed only 69 pitches to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Bores took the loss for the Mallards, falling to 1-1. Bores gave up four runs, eight in total over five innings.

Jerad Grundy (Heartland Community College) and Dan Tobik (Tennessee-Martin) each made appearances after Bores exited after the fifth.
