Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - The Madison Mallards will look to get back on track as the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters come to town Saturday for a 6:05 p.m. contest.
After a strong start to the season, the Mallards' pitching staff has struggled, giving up a total of 36 runs over the last four games; an average of a run per inning.
The offense has had its fair share of struggles too, scoring only five runs since scoring eleven runs in the first inning on June 15th. One of the bright spots for the Mallards' hitters continues to be Justin Scanlon (Michigan State). Scanlon is hitting .415 and is on a ten-game hitting streak entering Saturday's game. Other players making consistent contributions are Jumpy Garcia (Texas A&M - Corpus Christi) with a .407 average with three home runs; Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) with a .327 average; and Mike McQuillan (Iowa) with a .322 average.
Tom Windle (Minnesota) will toe the rubber for the Ducks against the Rafters. Windle has appeared in three games, two of which he started, and has compiled an ERA of 5.40 in ten innings of work. On the season, he has a 1-1 record, earning his first win in his last start at Battle Creek on June 12th.
Rapids comes into the two-game series against the Mallards with a .243 team batting average and looks to increase those numbers against a staff that has allowed thirty hits over its last two games. Leading the way for the Rafters is Bobby Martin (Valparaiso). Martin has the best average on the team, hitting at a .339 clip. The Rafters are also led by slugger Kyle Peterson (Eastern Michigan). Despite a .226 batting average, Peterson leads the entire Northwoods League with six home runs.
Pitcher Bard Douthit (USC) will get the nod to start Saturday's game. Douthit (2-1) lost to the Mallards back on opening night in the 3-2 Madison win. On the season, Douthit has gone 21 complete innings and has given up only four runs while racking up 20 strikeouts. In his last start, Douthit went seven innings and allowed no runs in the team's 2-1 win over Eau Claire. He has two of the three total wins for Rapids this season.
Saturday will also be Organ Donation Awareness Night at the "Duck Pond." Following the conclusion of game one will be a fireworks presentation sponsored by Charter Communications.

The Mallards activated new outfielder Trey Watkins (LSU) Saturday. To counter his activation, temporary player J. Golden (Blackhawk College) has been waived.
