Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Windsor, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors opened their weekend three game road trip with a heavy 5-1 loss to the Windsor Spitfires tonight at the WFCU Centre. The loss drops the Majors to 37-14-4-2 on the season.
Earlier in the season the Majors took the defending OHL and Memorial Cup Champions to a shootout. Tonight was a different story, as Windsor scored early and often in a route over Mississauga. The Majors kept the game close for the opening twenty minutes and Chris Carrozzi was a big reason why. The veteran goaltender faced 18 shots in the opening period. Windsor put themselves ahead when Justin Shugg beat Carrozzi with a quick shot blocker side to make it 1-0. The Majors answered back minutes later when Jordan Mayer put in his 25th goal of the season to tie the game. Kelly Geoffrey was a big reason for the goal with his crisp pass as he was falling to the ice. Mayer took the puck from his forehand to his backhand and past Philipp Grubauer. Kenny Ryan put the Spitfires ahead 2-1 when he scored thirteenth goal of the season. Ryan Ellis faked a shot and passed the puck to Ryan in the slot, who beat Carrozzi to make it 2-1. Carrozzi made several big saves to close the period keeping the 2-1 scoreline for Windsor.
Adam Henrique scored just over a minute into the second period on the power play to make it 3-1. After taking a pass Henrique batted in the puck to beat Carrozzi. The Spitfires scored two more goals in the opening five minutes of the third period to increase the lead to 5-1. Henrique struck again on the power play with his second of the game at 2:17. Carrozzi saved Ellis' shot, the rebound went to a wide open Henrique who beat Carrozzi. Just over two minutes later Eric Wellwood charged the Majors net and dropped the puck off for Greg Nemisz. Nemisz then finished the play to make it 5-1. The Majors continued to take penalties throughout the game and had to kill off a 5-on-3 in the closing minute of the game. Philipp Grubauer made 28 saves and earned the victory for Windsor. Chris Carrozzi made 50 saves on 55 shots and was handed the loss for Mississauga. The Majors will have a chance to bounce back tomorrow night in Plymouth when they face the Whalers at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday the Majors will travel to Saginaw to meet the Spirit at 7:11 p.m.
Notes: The Windsor Spitfires wore commemorative jerseys in tonight's game honouring the memory of former Spitfire Captain Mickey Renaud. Renaud died suddenly two years ago on February 18, 2008. The jerseys will be auctioned off in the coming weeks. Highly touted prospect Taylor Hall collected three assists for Windsor.
