August 6, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

SANFORD - The Sanford Mainers put up a crooked number for the second time in the three game series, plastering 12 runs onto the board in their 12-2 bashing of the Upper Valley Nighthawks Saturday night.

The Mainers will play tomorrow at Goodall Park, in Sanford, Maine where they will play host to the Valley Blue Sox in game one of a three game set.

The Mainers never trailed during the game, scoring three times in their half of the 1st. Johnny Slater (Michigan) got aboard to begin inning after being hit by a pitch, coming around to score on a Mike Landestoy (Texas Christian) RBI-single. Chris Gaetano (Monmouth) knocked in two more with a home run to right field, scoring himself and Landestoy to make it 3-0 early.

Sanford blew the game open later in the 5th inning, scoring six times on only three hits. Leading 4-0, Shaine Hughes (Monmouth) singled to open the inning, as Landestoy reached on an error by Upper Valley. Gaetano walked to load the bases, and Sam Stauble (Southern Maine) walked again to drive in a run. Catcher Tristan Chari (Vanderbilt) singled off the wall in right field to drive in two, as the Moose continued to score.

Todd Czinege (Villanova) and Zach Jancarski (Maryland) also had RBI singles for Sanford in the inning, and Hughes hit a sacrifice fly in his second plate appearance of the inning, all giving the Moose a 10-2 lead. The Mainers added two more in the 7th when Michael Young (Massachusetts Lowell) smacked a pinch-hit double to right-center field, driving home Slater and Czinege.

Young's springtime teammate Nick Kuzia (Massachusetts Lowell) provided the necessary firepower from the mound, earning the win in five innings of work, with six hits, two runs, two earned, a walk and a strike out allowed. Over the next four innings, the Mainers bullpen allowed just one hit to the opposing Nighthawks.

Upper Valley's starter Ryan Takacs (Manhattan College) was chased early on, only going three innings, as he allowed four hits, four runs, four earned and three walks in the loss.

The Mainers offense was evenly spread out, with Jancarski tallying three hits and Chari nabbing two, while no one else had more than one.

First pitch for the Mainers in game one against the Blue Sox will begin at 6:30 PM, with pregame action beginning on the NECBL Broadcast Network at 6:20 PM. The Mainers will play game two Monday in Holyoke, and then return to Goodall Park Tuesday, if necessary. Sanford posted a perfect 5-0 record against the Blue Sox in NECBL regular season action.
