Mainers Topple Waves 5-1

Sanford Mainers News Release

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RHODE ISLAND - A four-run 5th inning was just what the Mainers (1-1) needed to get by the Ocean State Waves (1-1) 5-4 at Old Mountain Field Friday night.

For Sanford, it marks their first win of the season and the first win of head coach Chris Morris' tenure as the leading figure of the Mainers coaching staff.

A 1-1 ballgame entering the visiting half of the 5th, Derek Bauer (Southern New Hampshire) and Paul McDonough (Southern Maine) led-off the inning with a pair of walks. A wild pitch put the two in scoring position, when Ako Thomas (Michigan) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Bauer, giving the Mainers a lead they would never relinquish.

Zach Jancarski (Maryland College Park) continued the offensive productivity with an RBI double to drive in McDonough to add to the lead. Shaine Hughes (Monmouth) would double in Jancarski next, which would be followed by a Nelson Mompierre (Miami Dade) RBI single. When the dust settled, the Mainers had opened up at 5-1 lead.

Sanford got on the board initially in the 3rd, when McDonough reached base and advanced to second on a Chris Hess (Rhode Island) throwing error. After a passed ball advanced McDonough to third, Thomas picked up the RBI on a single, which put the Mainers on-top 1-0.

While the Sanford defense made two errors over the course of the evening, the outfield defense was remarkable. Bauer made a diving catch to end the 1st, and Chris Gaetano (Monmouth) made what could be the defensive play of the season with a leaping catch over the right field fence to steal a sure home run from Hess.

Jordan Carr (UNC Asheville) picked up the win, going five innings, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out two. For the Waves, Jack Perkins went four and two thirds, allowing five runs (four earned) and four hits, two walks in the loss.

The Mainers play again Saturday, June 11 when they take on the Danbury Westerners from Rogers Park in Danbury, Connecticut. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM, and the game will be carried on the NECBL Broadcast Network and The Legends in Sanford, 1220 AM and 102.3 FM.
