Vermont Mountaineers News Release

LACONIA, N.H.- The Vermont Mountaineers picked up their first loss of the 2016 New England Collegiate Baseball League season on Friday night, as they fell at the hands of the Winnipesaukee Muskrats, 5-4.

Vermont starting pitcher went T.J. Santiago (Linden, N.J. / Adelphi) went four solid innings, allowing one run on four hits. His relief- Culver Lamb (Virginia Beach, V.A. / Old Dominion) and Morgan Maguier (Rumson, N.J. / Old Dominion)- combined to allow four runs on five hits over their five innings of work. The Muskrats started Austin Goeke (Bordentown, N.J. / Wagner), who pitched two innings and allowed no runs.

A walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth by Winnipesaukee third baseman Ryan Stekl (Lancaster, N.Y. / Canisius) gave the Muskrats the win. Stekl went 3-for-5 on the day with two crucial RBIs. His walk-off in the ninth was the difference-maker, but the junior also knocked a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth that tied the game up.

Vermont led for most of the game, and was shown the way offensively by second baseman Jeremy Giles, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs. Michael Osinski (Vestal, N.Y. / Longwood), who had the go-ahead RBI in the Mountaineers' opening game on Wednesday, had three hits and scored twice in on Friday.

The Mountaineers scored in the third inning when Giles homered for the first time, and the fourth inning when Osinski singled and scored on a past ball. Vermont took a 2-1 lead into the sixth when they rallied for two runs. Osinski led the inning off with a single, stole second, and then was driven in by Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, O.K. / Arkansas Little Rock). Giles' second homer came one batter later.

Vermont led 4-2 going into the bottom of the eighth, when Muskrats shortstop Jimmy Galusky (Arthurdale, W.V. / West Virginia) knocked a one-out single, and scored on Stekl's home run. That tied the game, and set Stekl up to come through again in the ninth with a walk-off.

Mike Gentile (Windsor Locks, C.T. / Ashland), who tossed one inning and allowed no runs on one hit, got the win for the Muskrats, who improve to 1-1. Morgan Maguire suffered the loss for the Mountaineers, who also fall to 1-1.

Vermont will go on the road again Saturday, when they'll travel to Upper Valley to take on the Nighthawks in the second game of the season series between the two instate rivals. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM at the Maxfield Sports Complex. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI, and streamed online through the NECBL Broadcast Network.
