Sanford Mainers News Release

HOLYOKE, M.A. - Despite a late start and near constant drizzle, the Mainers (13-12) won their fourth in a row 5-4 over the Valley Blue Sox (12-13) Saturday night at MacKenzie Stadium.

Sanford took the lead for good in the top of the 4th, putting the first two men aboard. Todd Czinege (Villanova) singled and Chris Gaetano (Monmouth) promptly walked, setting the stage for Jordan Powell (Rhode Island) two batters later. Powell knocked a single into the outfield to score Czinege, cutting the Blue Sox lead in half, making it 2-1.

Tristan Chari (Vanderbilt) then belted a two-RBI double, plating two more runs to give the Mainers a 3-1 lead. Michael Young (Massachusetts Lowell) concluded the scoring effort with a double of his own, driving in Chari to make it a 4-1 Mainers lead.

The Mainers tacked on another run just an inning later. Czinege doubled to open the inning and scored later on a Mike Landestoy (Texas Christian) RBI-single, to make 5-2.

Although Sanford had a lead and solid pitching from the pen, the Blue Sox refused to go quietly into the rain-soaked night. Trailing by three in the 9th, in pouring rain, former Mainer Derek Bauer (Southern New Hampshire) singled and Hezekiah Randolph (New Orleans) walked to put two aboard. Erik Ostberg (Hartford) immediately doubled to left-center field, making it one run game before finally being stranded in scoring positon as the ballgame ended.

The Mainers pitching staff put together a successful staff day as Jonah Normandeau (Maine Orono) got the start, and was relieved by Cole Townsend (Arkansas Little Rock) and Thomas Fortier (C of St. Joseph), who provided a combines six-and-two-thirds innings of three hit baseball.

With the win, Sanford gets back above the .500 mark and defeats Valley for the fourth time this season in as many chances, their third win by a 5-4 score.

The Mainers return home July 10, hosting the Plymouth Pilgrims in their first and only trip to Goodall Park in regular season play. First pitch is scheduled for 5 PM, with pregame coverage beginning on the NECBL Broadcast Network at 4:45 PM.
