Mystic Schooners News Release
SOUTH KINGSTOWN - The Mystic Schooners used a couple of four run innings to defeat the Ocean State Waves 10-7 at Old Mountain Field Saturday night.
It took three innings for both teams to get on the board but the Schooners exploded in the top of the inning for their first four run inning of the game.
With one out in the inning, Tysh Terashima started it off with an infield single and then stole second base. After Toby Handley walked and Nick Mascelli reached on a fielders choice, Chase Lunceford hit a sharp grounder through the infield to score Terashima from third. Brett Bond followed that up with a walk to load the bases full of Schooners. Aaron Hill then walked to bring in Mascelli from third. The next two runs came around with a two RBI line drive double by Martin Figueroa to give the Schooners a 4-0 lead.
Ocean State got one run back in the home half of the third with an RBI single off of Schooners starter John Signore to make the score 4-1 at the end of three.
The fifth run of the game came around for the Schooners in the fourth. With two outs and Casey Baker on base his Stony Brook teammate Toby Handley doubled him in to make it 5-1 Schooners.
The Waves got another run back in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-2 heading into the sixth inning.
In that inning the Schooners offense racked up four runs for the second time in the game. Figueroa was hit by a pitch to lead it off to bring up Casey Baker who sent his first home run of the season over the right center field fence to bring the Schooner lead to 7-2.
Mystic was not done yet, after the home run, Zach Goldstein and Terashima both singled and Nick Mascelli and Aaron Hill brought them both in with RBI singles to give the Schooners a 9-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Ocean State would start to cut into the lead scoring two in the sixth and three in the eighth to make it just a three run game going into the ninth.
But the Schooners would tack on one more run for insurance with an RBI groundout off the bat of Brett Bond to score Nick Mascelli from third to give the Schooners the 10-7 victory.
John Signore made his first start for the Schooners this season. He picked up the win going five innings, giving up two earned on six hits and striking out two batters. Matt Ardente and Jason Foley brought it to the ninth for Ryan Thomas who picked up the save in the ninth. Thomas did not give up a hit in the ninth.
With the win the Schooners improve to 15-11 on the season and are now just one game out of first place in the Southern Division. Mystic will have two days off before heading to Montpelier Vermont to take on the Mountaineers Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
